Always Together

Tomo-chan loves his grandpa.
Every day, play together, eat together, take a bath together, and go to bed together.
Tomo-chan likes grandma too, but grandpa is the best.

Tomo-chan’s dad and mom are busy with work, so Tomo-chan can only see them in the mornings and evenings.
While dad and mom can stay with Tomo-chan on their days off, Tomo-chan loves to spend time with grandpa.
Tomo-chan says, “Grandpa, we’ll be together for ever and ever.” and grandpa replies, “Yes, I’ll be with you for ever and ever.”
When grandpa rides his bicycle, Tomo-chan sits on the front chair.
When grandpa drives a car, Tomo-chan sits next to him.
When grandpa eats ramen, Tomo-chan is given a bowl to eat it in.

When Tomo-chan throws a toy,
he says, “Hey, do not throw that,” with a scary face.
Yet, Tomo-chan loves grandpa.

One day, grandpa has stomachache and goes to a hospital.
Since then, he has not come home.
Tomo-chan goes to see grandpa.
Grandpa is in bed,
but he looks fine with a smile on his face.
He said, “Good to see you, good to see you.”
and patted Tomo-chan on the head.
“When are you coming back, Grandpa?”
“I’ll be back in good health.”

Dad and Tomo-chan goes to a store where carps are swimming.
They buy some carp extract and delivers it to grandpa.
Dad says, “The nutrition of carp is good for the body.”
Tomo-chan tries some, but it is not tasty.

“I’m going to pick up Grandpa.”
Grandma says to Tomo-chan.
Grandpa is getting better!
When Tomo-chan goes to pick him up, Grandpa is lying in bed, not moving at all.
“Grandpa never gets up anymore.”
Grandpa’s farewell ceremony is held after that.

Grandpa won’t open his eyes anymore.
Grandpa won’t talk anymore.
Tomo-chan’s eyes are welled up with tears, no matter how hard he tries to wipe them away.
Goodbye, Grandpa.

Tomo-chan goes to the dunes with dad and mom.
The dunes are spacious, sandy, and difficult to walk on.
Tomo-chan struggles to follow dad and mom.
But,
Tomo-chan stops, feeling heavy on his feet.
The wind is blowing and the sand is moving.
Oh, my, oh, my.
Somehow, the sand pattern looks like Grandpa’s face.
“Grandpa.”
“Tomo-chan, walk a little further.
You can see the ocean.”
Tomo-chan walks as hard as he can to the ocean.

Tomo-chan goes to the park with dad and mom.
After eating mom’s lunch box, Tomo-chan lay down on the ground.
The clouds in the sky are drifting away.
Oh, my, oh, my.
The clouds look like Grandpa’s face.
“Grandpa, you’re a cloud today.”
“I can see you clearly, Tomo-chan.”
Tomo-chan naps peacefully.

A day after the rain.
Water striders are walking in a puddle.
Oh, my, oh, my.
Their footprints look like Grandpa’s face.
“Grandpa, can you become water?”
“I can be anything.”

Tomo-chan tells Grandma.
“Grandpa is everywhere.
Many things look like him.”
Grandma listens to Tomo-chan and says to him.
“I see now that Grandpa is always with you, wherever you are.”

Just like Grandpa says.
Always, always, together.
